Colliderscope May 2012 - have a rex on this:

Afternoon,

As mentioned by yours truly at frequent intervals on last night’s Colliderscope, here is your track list and listen again thingumies. You can download the podcast from Soundcloud, or have it shoved into your mp3 do-dad automatically by clicking the itunes logo, right. And don’t forget Mixcloud neither.

On the miaow mix for May we had the multi-talented DJ Loopin, got some late breaking news about the very same:

As a musician and multi-instrumentalist he adopted turntables as another musical instrument he regulary plays on.

He’s a member of Tawatt DJs group [not 100% sure how well that name scans into the Queen’s Anglais] and for many years a guitar player and a member of a popular czech band United Heads.

Has recently started a new project with DJ Sunpaja and Rich.FD - the 4 turtables, guitar, sax, melodica and flute mixed together into one great Funky set - all done by 3 persons only.

So now you know - definitely one to watch, so much quality tunage coming out of Eastern Europe at the moment, where have they been hiding? Hope to bring you much more from the Loopin in future ‘Scopes*.

Right, without further ado - here’s the tuneage. Don’t be a stranger, see you next month.

Colliderscope April 2012 - with Ronald Aquinas

Saturday 14th April, 10pm (GMT), Space Invader Radio

Call the paramedics, there’s a bass bin in need of a band aid, as Colliderscope comes careening through your evening this coming Saturday - that’s the 14th, ja wohl! Hope you noticed my use of your actual German just then. That’s in honour of April’s guest spinner, straight outta Dresden, Ronald Aquinas. Just like the city famed for its spectacular and unconventional architecture, Ronald has assembled a fantastic, modernist masterpiece with all the majesty of the Zwinger Palace. When he’s not rocking the spot leben in der mischung, you’ll find your boy hunched over a digital audio workstation, carefully crafting a banging tune or a bottom-heavy re-work. When it comes to mixing, yours truly ain’t much of a lad for the fast edit, so I’m the first to offer the propers to a DJ who can think on his feet - Herr Aquinas does not disappoint in this respect, shoe-horning a blistering number of tracks from breaks & booties to hip hop, to jungle to holy shizzle what is that, over an intense forty minute sesh. Keep it locked for a little funk in your house like this.

Either side you’ve got me, as always, going at it with all the due care and attention of pioneering atom smashers. Some unconventional booties are all lined up to haul ass in the early stages of the show, before we knock it up to an even tonne on the autobahn, leading up to the aforementioned Aquinas’s turn on the wheels. Look out for a murderously good beaty monster from breaks’ golden child of the moment, Mafia Kiss - biggups that man! Final third of the show is shrouded in dark majestical mystery but is hotly tipped to contain (amongst other things), snares that crack like miniature sonic booms and things that go “wub wub wub” very loudly.

That’s enough simili from me, trust I’ll see you on Saturday from 10pm (GMT) on Space Invader. Sicher!

Colliderscope March 2012 - with Anthony Atcherley

Up here in the cosy confines of the ball pond room of the International Space Station, sipping NASA booze and gazing down upon the Earth below, it’s easy to forget the trouble and strife that is the day to day for many of her inhabitants. From up here there are no borders, just a beautiful, azure, slowly revolving Wild Damson of tranquility. Music, too, enjoys similar utopian freedom from the confines of country and code, although obviously it helps if it comes with a gut-pounding kick and a filthy bass line. So with that in mind, it’s time to get your head out of the clouds and feet on the floor, ready to shuffle them around in a decreasingly self-conscious fashion as Colliderscope prepares, yet again, to rock your socks off - this very Saturday (10th March 2012) at 10pm (GMT).

It’s been solid gold year for guesties on the show so far this year and we’re only three months in…DJ Yamin and Nate Wize got us off to a wicked ecelctic, funk-toting, hip hopping, soul-having start. And for March I’m genuinely honoured to be able to bring you a mix from a very different perspective indeed. Anthony Atcherley isn’t perhaps a name you’ll instantly associate with French-influenced, ecstatic house music. It’s more of an actor’s moniker perhaps, it wouldn’t look out of place on the bill of the Royal Shakespear Company. Yet I’m confident that it won’t be long before Atcherley is right where he belongs - at the top of the jolly well look at me I’m the danciest game. Kissy Klubbers will already have heard his rework of Prince’s U Got the Look on way cool and trendy Radio 1, but this ain’t a one-hit wonder thing. Hold on for the middle part of Colliderscope where we’ll spend forty minutes with Anthony in the Miaow Mix, whilst tears of joy stream down our grateful cheeks.

Either side of themanlikethe I’ll be almost totally spending myself churning together a wide selection of bump’n’grind in a technique akin to the way they make chewing gum. We’ll jump in feet first around 100bpm with some instrumental hip hop, followed by a few rhymes before ploughing headlong into a furlong or two of firm to hard going booty breaks. Then, rounding off a simply perfect evening, we’ll go darker - as we customarily do - with choicest jungle/d’n’b/dubsteppers before it’s time to say night night.

Got a good feeling about this one…see you Sat on Space Invader Radio.

Colliderscope 11th February 2012 - Milk Tray with Nate Wize

Bless up bredren. How’s the weather on your planet? Here in the Greater London area we’re freezing our extremities off.  Which is to be expected, as it is winter and it isn’t exactly toasty around this time of year. And in any case, this Saturday Colliderscope comes crashing through the internet generating an awful lot of fiyah. Consider this, therefore, your usual monthly invitation to understand why they’re called ‘long throw’ woofers.

On the Miaow Mix for February, arriving laiden with a box of chocs and some flowers from the garage (or gas station, to those more familiar with the North American lexicon) is Nate Wize, fresh out of Toronto, which is in Canada. Nate is a busy boy at present, I know, as it’s probably easier to get an audience with Le Tres Honorable Stephen Harper. Never-the-less, your boy took time out from touring with Dubmatix Soundsystem (where he’ll be found nightly on keys and turntable duty) to put together a proper roller of a mix for the edification of your booty - and very grateful we are too. Expect a hip-hop infused, soul wrapped, funk saturated neck snapper with a dubby liquid centre - with plenty of home grown garnishes lavishly layered on top. Don’t miss.

Meanwhile, I’ll be going to town either side in a big way with the customary collection of bass and and booties. Kicking off with a bunch of heavy-duty-party-starters up to Nate’s turn on the wheels, then taking things a tad darker into dub/drumstep/d’n’b territories before flinging you into the wild abandon of an ecstatic finish. I’m breathless just imagining it.

This Saturday (11th Feb 2012) is the date, 10pm (GMT) is the time and Space Invader Radio is where you need to be.

Safe.

PS. Be right back here from the 12th for all your listen again nonsense.

Colliderscope January 2012 - with DJ Yamin

Hello you. Let me be like Jules Holland and pretend it’s 11:59:59 December 31st 2011 (whereas in reality it’s not) and say HAPPY NEW YEAR! Now then, let’s all have a sing song.

2012 - An Olympic year for the athletics world and no doubt a phat with a P. H. year for Colliderscope. Let’s start as we mean to go on, with two hours of big booty breaks, bass lines and succulent hooks on a monthly basis starting from this Saturday at 10pm (GMT) - ok?

On the Miaow Mix this month all the way from New Orleans, U S of A, is super duper  winner spinner DJ Yamin. You’ll have heard his inspired rework work on Colliderscopes past and it was hearing the very same that made it imperitive he do time on the wheels for us. You can expect to fall in love over forty minutes with an expertly blended soul/funk/hip-hop joy ride that warrants repeated listening (which it shall be possible to do from Sunday 15th).

Either side of the Yamin you’ve got me slotting together mixes in the manner of someone assembling a jigsaw with a hammer.  It’s hands in the air as ever for the first tranche of the show, we’ll do breaks and booties, we’ll do hip-hop and heavy heavy 4/4 rollers - but it’s not all Pomagne and streamers ‘cos come the final third of the show we go darker with an obligatory trio of dub-step offerings, smoothest blended D&B before lobbing in a curveball right at the end which will have you grinning from ear to shell-like ear. Look out too for a brace of absolutely t-for-tremendous hip-hop stick-stack-stonkers from DJ Grazzhoppa, so good I couldn’t choose between em’ so here they both are for your pleasure and delight.

See you Sat - it’s gonna be a doozy.

Colliderscope 10th December 2011 - with DJ FeyDer

It’s beginning to look very much like that time again, ladies and gents. And while you’ll soon be partying like a celeb, quaffing Asti and belting down innumerate reheated, luxury, liquid-centred savoury nibbles…in the meantime once again I bring you Colliderscope…thrusting its twitching, gift-wrapped member all up in your grill and begging to be opened well before the appointed festive morn.

And for December, like the Beatnuts said, we got the funk.

Kicking off a line of straight up bangers this month is Pretty Lights’ bass line genius GRiZ with another unlikely yet perfectly executed re-working, then into breaks and booties from Timothy Wisdom, Umbo and The Break Beat Junkie. A quick snifter of dry sherry and it’s heads down for a spot of moombahton from DJ Apt One before Lee Mortimer pulls a four-four groover out of the bag that’ll cause you to become amorously aroused.  Baymont Bross up next then brace yourself for a full hour of hands in the unashamed hands in the air lunacy, with booties from Grizzla, DJ E-1000 and Basement Freaks laying the ground work for our Miaow Mixing guest…

All the way from Nizhny Novgorod (formerly known as Gorky and as you’ll doubtless be aware, the fifth largest city in Russia) is snare torturing ragga jungle nutcase, DJ FeyDer.

If there is more frenetic drum programming out there in the jungle world, I’m not sure it would be very healthy for you. FeyDer takes the heady spirit of that ‘94ish  ragga sound and twists it into and entirely different beast.  You’ve heard people talk about the ‘Russian sound’ and here it is, larger than life and off its face, banging on your front door demanding more Vodka. FeyDer has turned in a brutal, uncompromising ragga jungle belter which’ll knock yer stuffing out.

After an intense hour and a half, we’ll get a tad bit reflective on the homeward straight, heading towards midnight. Keeping the drum’n’bass vibe alive, albeit on a more placid tip, we have the ever dependable DJ Trax remixed in fine atmospheric style by Naibu, the roll-tastic ZZZZZ from Double O and a beatific builder of a remix from Liondub & Twister. Morphy dub it up for a spell but it’s a major twist in proceedings that’ll find us breaking and shaking it up to the witching hour.

All in all it’s going to be a bit of a ding dong. See you this Saturday (10/12/2011) from 10pm (GMT) on Space Invader Radio.
